David Tennant Returns as the Tenth Doctor with a Surprise Companion

David Tennant is stepping back into the TARDIS for another run of adventures across time and space. British production company Big Finish, known for producing audio dramas and shorts based on Doctor Who, has announced a new full-cast series starring the actor as the Tenth Doctor.

Rather than traveling alongside familiar companions like Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, or Donna Noble, the Doctor will team up with someone from the wider franchise lore. Anjli Mohindra is reprising her role as Rani Chandra for the 12-episode audio series, titled Doctor Who — The Tenth Doctor and Rani.

Mohindra first appeared in the 2008 spinoff series The Sarah Jane Adventures. In that program, Rani worked alongside Clyde Langer, Luke Smith, and the robotic dog K9 to help Sarah Jane Smith defend Earth from alien threats. Sarah Jane took Rani under her wing to teach her investigative journalism, a career path that eventually led Rani to become one of the top journalists in the world after Sarah Jane passed away.

According to the official Big Finish news post, a shared connection to Sarah Jane reunites the Doctor and Rani. Across three new storylines, the pair will investigate cryptids in modern Cumbria, disrupt the set of a 1970s science fiction program, and resolve a crisis during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth I.

The duo previously met on screen during “The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith,” a story from The Sarah Jane Adventures where the Tenth Doctor encountered a much younger Rani.

While Tennant is not heading back to the live-action television series, the upcoming audio production offers Whovians another set of stories featuring the Tenth Doctor before his regeneration. Big Finish will release Doctor Who — The Tenth Doctor and Rani in August 2027.
