Critics Dislike Ridley Scott’s ‘Canopus’

The first wave of international reviews for Ridley Scott’s latest feature, “The Dog Stars,” has arrived.

Starring Jacob Elordi, the film has met with a lukewarm reception, currently holding a 39% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 51 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics have pointed to a lackluster screenplay, a derivative post-apocalyptic setting, underdeveloped character arcs, and a sluggish pace that drags the runtime.

Adapted from Peter Heller’s novel of the same name, the story is set in a future devastated by a mysterious pandemic that has wiped out much of the global population. The narrative follows Hig (Elordi), a pilot living in a derelict airport hangar with his loyal dog, as he eventually embarks on a perilous journey in search of civilization’s remnants.

The ensemble cast also features Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce. The screenplay was penned by Mark L. Smith (known for “The Revenant”), with production costs exceeding $100 million. 20th Century Studios is scheduled to release the film in theaters abroad later this week.
