Critical Role is Bringing Overwatch to Tabletop RPGs

Blizzard Entertainment has never hesitated to infuse the vibrant universe of its free-to-play hero-shooter Overwatch with unexpected cultural crossovers. From high-profile collaborations with Burger King and Fortnite to whimsical partnerships with Hello Kitty, these partnerships have previously delivered striking cosmetic skins and limited-time game modes, though they rarely ventured into uncharted territory.

That is set to change with the upcoming Overwatch showcase, which bridges the gap between the franchise’s established sci-fi aesthetic and the imaginative realm of tabletop role-playing games. Questwatch marks the debut official Overwatch TTRPG campaign, broadcasting live from BlizzCon on September 13. The landmark session will be spearheaded by Matthew Mercer—celebrated widely as the Dungeon Master for Critical Role and renowned voice actor for Overwatch’s own sharpshooter, Cassidy.

Mercer will step into the role of Game Master, guiding a quartet of heroes across an uncharted expedition through Overland. While the supporting roster and exact rule system remain under wraps, promotional artwork released by Blizzard shows Cassidy clutching two d12 dice—a signature mechanic of Critical Role’s proprietary TTRPG system, Daggerheart. Comprehensive details regarding Questwatch are slated to debut during the BlizzCon opening ceremony.

Admittedly, Cassidy might seem like an unconventional ambassador for a tabletop campaign. Heroes like Lúcio, Sombra, or D.Va feel tailor-made for such geek-chic hobbies. Even so, when it comes to steering players through an intricate fantasy narrative, enlisting a seasoned storyteller of Mercer’s caliber is an undeniable masterstroke by Blizzard.

Although this initiative isn’t officially billed as a Critical Role collaboration, the groundwork for a broader alliance is certainly there. Given the meteoric rise of Critical Role and the seamless adaptability of high-fantasy aesthetics into hero-shooter cosmetics, a future crossover feels entirely plausible.

Even independent of a formal partnership, the prospect of a standalone Overwatch TTRPG handbook holds immense potential. With major entertainment properties like Star Wars and Avatar: The Last Airbender receiving dedicated tabletop adaptations from industry giants like Wizards of the Coast, expanding the Overwatch universe into pen-and-paper gaming is a natural evolution—especially considering Blizzard’s flagship MMO, World of Warcraft, is set to receive an official D&D sourcebook this November.

For now, however, the focus remains squarely on injecting a healthy dose of high fantasy into Blizzard’s flagship shooter. Fans won’t have to wait long to learn which rule set will power the adventure or whether the campaign will tie into canonical lore, as all will be revealed during the BlizzCon opening ceremony on September 12.
