Critical Role Confirms Vox Machina’s World is Not Canceled Yet

Following the emotional conclusion of Critical Role’s Campaign 3: Bells Hells, the community was met with significant announcements regarding the future of the beloved Dungeons & Dragons series. Departing from the familiar lands of Exandria—the meticulously curated world built by co-founder and Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer—Campaign 4 is set to debut in a brand-new realm titled Aramán. Furthermore, the mantle of Dungeon Master will be passed to Dimension 20’s Brennan Lee Mulligan. While the shift has generated immense excitement, some dedicated fans have expressed uncertainty about whether this transition marks a permanent exit from Exandria.

In a recent interview with Polygon, the cast and founders of Critical Role clarified that they have no intention of leaving Exandria behind.

“Even as someone who hasn’t pored over every line of every tome Matt Mercer has authored for Exandria, I can tell you that the potential for narrative exploration is essentially limitless,” noted Travis Willingham, co-founder and CEO of Critical Role.

Evidence of the company’s enduring commitment to Exandria is abundant. Just this past May, the ensemble traveled to Atlanta for their Bells Hells & the Maelstrom Kingdom live event, where they unveiled an uncharted underwater region of the world. This performance served as the launchpad for their broader Echoes of Exandria tour, signaling that the studio has plenty more stories waiting to be told within this setting.

Beyond the tabletop experience, Exandria remains the cornerstone of Critical Role’s transmedia strategy. The company continues to produce high-quality animated adaptations like The Legends of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, with rumors swirling about a potential Bells Hells project depending on audience demand. Furthermore, they are currently collaborating with AdHoc Studios on a dedicated video game, which—while still shrouded in mystery—is confirmed to be firmly rooted in the lore of Exandria.

Ultimately, while Willingham reaffirmed that the team is dedicated to their primary setting, he emphasized that they are also eager to embrace new creative frontiers.

“Exandria isn’t going anywhere; it will remain a cornerstone for quite some time,” Willingham added. “However, as we’ve demonstrated with Campaign 4, Aramán, and the brilliant guidance of Brennan Lee Mulligan, we are equally thrilled to expand our horizons and explore entirely new narrative landscapes.”
