Creators of the original The Blair Witch Project to produce horror reboot

In 2024, Lionsgate and Blumhouse announced a revival of The Blair Witch Project. Now, the creative minds behind the iconic 1999 original have officially joined the project.

The original film’s directors, Eduardo Sánchez, Dan Myrick, and Gregg Hale, are set to serve as executive producers, alongside stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams. Following Lionsgate’s acquisition of the franchise rights, both Leonard and Williams demanded financial compensation and advisory roles on all future installments of the series.

Dylan Clark has been tapped to helm the new installment. Specific plot details, the cast, and the release date remain under wraps. The 1999 original followed three film students who traveled to Maryland to document a local legend—the Blair Witch—only to find themselves hunted by a malevolent supernatural presence.

Produced on a shoestring budget of $22,000, the film became a worldwide sensation, grossing $248 million and permanently altering the landscape of the horror genre. A 2016 sequel, Blair Witch, failed to capture the same magic, suffering a poor reception from both critics and audiences alike.
