Sony Delays Production of “28 Years Later” Sequel
Director Danny Boyle has confirmed that production on the third installment of the “28 Years Later” franchise has been delayed.
“It’s been pushed to the back burner,”
— the filmmaker admitted during a discussion at the BFI London Film Festival.
Boyle cited a lack of secured funding, along with the conflicting schedules of both himself and screenwriter Alex Garland, as the primary reasons for the setback. Previously, the director had noted that Cillian Murphy was expected to make a significant return in the third entry.
“28 Years Later” debuted in 2025. The story is set in a Great Britain devastated by the “Rage virus,” following a teenager named Spike (Alfie Williams) as he struggles to survive.
The project also featured Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Jodie Comer, among others. A follow-up, “The Bone Temple,” was released in January 2026 but ultimately underperformed at the box office.
