David Zucker, co-creator of The Naked Gun franchise, sharply criticized the recent reboot that features Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson.
Zucker claimed the film lifted concepts from the original Naked Gun and was produced primarily as a profit-driven enterprise.
“Large budgets and effective comedy rarely go hand in hand, and in the new Naked Gun you could see them pouring money into flashy technical set pieces while attempting to imitate our tone. It feels like everyone is doing this for the money now, and that seems to be the sole reason they decided to make another Naked Gun,” Zucker told Woman’s World.
Leslie Nielsen starred in the original cult trilogy (1988–1994). Paramount Pictures’ remake premiered in August and amassed $102 million worldwide. Directed by Akiva Schaffer (known for Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers), the film earned strong reviews, holding an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
