Coppola Sells Watch Collection After ‘Megalopolis’ Flops

Francis Ford Coppola has put an exquisite assortment of watches up for auction in New York. Among the highlights is a chronometer by famed watchmaker François‑Paul Journe; instead of a conventional hour hand its dial features a mechanical hand fashioned from sketches attributed to a 16th‑century surgeon. Journe spent roughly nine years developing these timepieces, which are estimated to be worth about one million dollars.

Proceeds from the sale will help Coppola offset the financial shortfall from Megalopolis — the film, produced on a $120 million budget, only earned about $14 million at the box office and was widely considered a commercial failure. Still, the director has no regrets about the time and money invested; for him, Megalopolis holds significant artistic value.
