Comedian Kyle Gordon Discusses Terrible Video Game Inspirations for Mr. Jambo

I feel a deep connection with musician-comedian Kyle Gordon based solely on his pop-culture touchstones. Whether he is spoofing Eurodance hard enough to mint a song of the summer, making hyper-specific gags about SSX Tricky NPCs, or traveling all the way to Africa to send up Graceland, Kyle Gordon’s dedication to lambasting the stuff he seems to love resonates with me. I have never pushed harder to book a guest on Shelf Quest.

I was not sure whether the performer of this year’s best parody song, “Mr. Jambo,” had the type of memories required for an episode of Polygon’s nostalgic interview series. When I realized his new album Kyle Gordon Is Everywhere was dropping on Oct. 2, I seized the opportunity to do something with the guy for our 2026 Fall Preview. Thankfully, when we pitched an appearance on Shelf Quest, Kyle Gordon’s e-mail response asked if this was the type of show where it would be OK to discuss the music of Buck Bumble. Oh yes. Yes it is.

Kyle Gordon’s comedy arc is not too radical. He grew up singing a capella covers in high school and college before descending into the throes of the New York City improv scene. Unlike most of his guitar-strumming funny guy contemporaries, the 33-year-old musician has gone where few but “Weird” Al Yankovic have dared to go, cutting parody songs and elaborate music videos that somehow land both punchlines and listenability. I am relieved to know the official Dr. Demento Facebook Group resoundingly approves of his skills.

Kyle Gordon’s journey on Shelf Quest starts in the darkness. Superman 64 means a lot to the performer. He saved a lot of allowance to buy that tragic game. Like many guests, his parents had some strict rules about video games, which only made the desire to plow through Superman 64 stronger, against all logic.

If you’re gonna make something really bad, you have to make sure that, like, 8-year-olds latch onto it, because they’re the only ones stupid enough to not realize all the terrible elements of it.

Quality is not the only metric when it comes to what Kyle Gordon has loved over the years. He talks lovingly about the British house-music weirdness of Buck Bumble and Bomberman Hero, the hip-hop and ’70s-soul mashup of NBA Street Vol. 2, and the punk-heavy soundtrack of Tony Hawk Underground. Then there are games, like Medal of Honor, that hit him in a more emotional spot.
