In 1964, Italian director Sergio Leone redefined the Western with A Fistful of Dollars. Eschewing the simple morality tales of earlier Westerns, the central gunslinger was not a noble hero. Instead, he was an opportunistic cad who used two rival factions in an Old West town against each other for a big payday. The film became an international success, proving audiences were ready for a new kind of Western. It showed that Americans no longer held a monopoly on the genre and that Clint Eastwood was a bankable star outside of television.
Sergio Leone managed to top himself just a year later.
1965’s For a Few Dollars More features the return of Clint Eastwood as “The Man with No Name.” That title was primarily a marketing invention, as characters call him “Manco” in this movie and “Joe” in the previous one despite being the same person. Manco is a bounty hunter tracking the ruthless, murderous bank robber El Indio, played by Gian Maria Volonté. Indio’s gang of thieves recently broke him out of prison. Colonel Douglas Mortimer, another bounty hunter, is also on Indio’s trail. Mortimer differs vastly from Manco. While Manco is instinctive and rough around the edges, Mortimer is cold and precise.
Manco and Mortimer forge an uneasy alliance to take down Indio despite their differences and mutual distrust. The duo hatches a plan to separately join the ranks of Indio’s gang. They aim to gain his trust, eliminate him, claim the reward, and split the money. A bigger payday enters the picture after Indio successfully executes a major bank job and stashes the cash until the danger passes. Manco and Mortimer then set their sights on the hidden stash alongside the bounty.

The film stands out for its deep moral complexity. While A Fistful of Dollars broke the mold with a multifaceted protagonist, every character in For a Few Dollars More is complicated. Eastwood’s Manco retains his gruff opportunism, but partnering with Mortimer adds another layer. The two men share an organic arc where they gain mutual respect. The dynamic resembles a buddy cop pairing because it unites an unlikely duo who evolve from sizing each other up into true partners valuing each other’s strengths. Mortimer hides a secret throughout the film, and his true motivations for hunting Indio only emerge at the very end.
Indio is a remarkably complex villain. Sergio Leone and Gian Maria Volonté crafted an antagonist more tortured than a typical Western bad guy. He carries a pocket watch bearing the face of a woman who was one of his victims and died by suicide while he was raping her. The watch plays an eerie musical tune that Indio uses to time his duels. He also remains in a drug-induced daze for much of the movie while still prone to flashes of rage and violence. These layers make him unpredictable and real rather than simply sympathetic.

For a Few Dollars More received a much larger budget of $600,000 compared to the approximately $200,000 budget of A Fistful of Dollars. The second movie expands significantly in scale. A Fistful of Dollars was mostly limited to vast empty desertscapes and a small frontier town with few buildings. In contrast, For a Few Dollars More explores the larger town of El Paso. The production built an impressive frontier set for the film in Spain, where much of it was shot, and the set still stands today as a tourist attraction. Increased action and a larger population make El Paso feel bigger than San Miguel.
For a Few Dollars More became an even greater commercial success. The first movie grossed about $20 million, while the sequel improved on that total by earning $25 million. Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood repeated this success a third time just one year later with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. That third film cost just over $1 million to produce and grossed nearly $40 million, becoming larger, more epic, and more widely known. However, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly relies on the foundation built by For a Few Dollars More, which is available to watch for free online.
