Or maybe you have tickets for tomorrow and want to bone up on the cartoons before arriving at the theater. Regardless of the reason, if you want some great Looney Tunes shorts as a companion piece for Coyote vs. ACME, these seven essential entries can help you out. Currently, all of these can be found for free on Tubi, but they are difficult to find there because the streamer lists them in a strange, backwards order with three random shorts grouped together as episodes. 1. Fast and Furry-Ous (1949)

1949’s Fast and Furry-ous is the perfect place to start because it is the very first short featuring both Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. Directed by Chuck Jones, this cartoon makes it clear that Jones knew exactly who these characters were right off the bat. All the essential elements are here, including the repeated injuries inflicted upon the coyote, Road Runner’s beep beep catchphrase, and even a faulty ACME invention called the ACME Super Outfit. Wile E.’s eyes are drawn a little differently in this one, as a distinct red ring surrounds them that he drops later, but beyond that, this remains a quintessential Coyote and Road Runner cartoon.

2. Beep, Beep (1961)

Choosing a Road Runner and Coyote short directed by Chuck Jones means you cannot go wrong. They are all fairly similar because the coyote is always trying to catch the road runner, but the gags differ and the comedic timing stays sharp. 1961’s Beep, Beep features a prop central to the plot of Coyote vs. ACME: Wile E.’s ACME Rocket Powered Roller Skates. They look a bit different in the movie, but the idea and the severe injuries they cause remain the same.

3. Gee Whiz-z-z-z-z-z-z (1956)

This Chuck Jones short stars Wile E. and Road Runner and features one of the most distinctive ACME items ever created: the ACME Bat-Man’s Outfit. This bright green, winged costume looks nothing like the superhero. The coyote looks hilarious in this costume, and his momentary mastery of the suit builds up to one of his best crashes ever.

4. All Fowled Up (1955)

For Foghorn Leghorn, you want a short directed by Robert McKimson, who created the character and directed all of his classic-era shorts. Originally, Foghorn Leghorn was meant to be a supporting player to the tiny chicken hawk Henery Hawk, but Foghorn Leghorn possessed such a big personality that he took over and ended up starring in cartoons both with and without Henery.

This short features Henery, but the funniest dynamic exists between Foghorn Leghorn and the Barnyard Dog. With most other Looney Tunes characters, the rivalry between stars comes down to hunger, such as Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner, or hunting, like Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny. For Foghorn Leghorn and the Barnyard Dog, their rivalry is unwarranted, usually triggered because Foghorn Leghorn feels bored and decides to rile up the mutt just for fun. In the opening scene of All Fowled Up, the dog sleeps, so Foghorn Leghorn walks up behind him and spanks him repeatedly with a fence post.

Foghorn Leghorn acts as a total jerk in this one, which makes him the perfect Looney Tune to play the villain in Coyote vs. ACME.

5. Tweetie Pie (1947)

In Coyote vs. ACME, Foghorn is not the only villainous bird, as Tweety also works for the ACME Corporation as hired muscle. For those who regard the canary as the cutest and sweetest Looney Tune, the choice may come as a surprise, but it aligns with the original iteration of the character. In early Tweety shorts like 1947’s Tweetie Pie, directed by Friz Freleng, Tweety was a mischievous character who delighted in getting Sylvester into trouble. That dynamic drives Tweetie Pie, where an orphaned little bird is taken in by a woman with a cat named Thomas, though he is Sylvester. The cat keeps trying to eat him, but Tweety gives as good as he gets by repeatedly landing the cat in trouble. This cartoon showcases Tweety’s dark tendencies before they were watered down later.

6. Daffy Duck in Hollywood (1938)

Another bird that may have seemed out of character in Coyote vs. ACME is Daffy Duck, who acts as a wild hooting character in the movie instead of the greedier and grouchier persona most people remember. In Daffy’s earlier cartoons, particularly those directed by Tex Avery or Bob Clampett, Daffy lived up to his name as a wild, bouncing troublemaker who delighted in tormenting others. Daffy Duck in Hollywood is a great example of this, as Daffy tries to break into movies by annoying everyone until they relent. Tex Avery directed this short, and his name serves as the namesake for Will Forte’s character in Coyote vs. ACME.

7. You Ought to Be in Pictures (1940)

Friz Freleng’s You Ought to Be in Pictures is funny, though slightly more slow-moving than the others in this lineup. It is included here as a curiosity because, just like Coyote vs. ACME, it features a blend of live-action and animation. During a time when Porky Pig stood as the biggest Looney Tunes character before Daffy and Bugs overshadowed him in the 1940s, Daffy persuades Porky to quit the cartoon business to become a leading man in features so that Daffy can take over as the star of Looney Tunes. The animated Porky walks off the page and into the live-action office of executive Leon Schlesinger to quit, though it does not take long for Porky to realize he made a mistake.
