Director Christopher Nolan has confirmed that a historical epic, “Troy,” was in development in the mid-2000s.
According to the filmmaker, Warner Bros. initially hired him to direct the project, but the studio later declined to move forward with his involvement.
“Warner Bros. originally brought me on for ‘Troy.’ Wolfgang [Petersen] had developed it, and when the studio chose not to continue with his superhero picture [‘Batman v Superman’], he wanted it back. It was a world I was very interested in exploring. I thought about it for a long time—particularly certain images, like the Trojan Horse and similar elements,” Nolan recalled in an interview with Empire.
Ultimately Warner returned “Troy” to Petersen and offered Nolan “Batman Begins” as a consolation. “Troy,” starring Brad Pitt, was released in 2004 and earned $490 million worldwide.
Nolan will revisit Ancient Greece with “Odyssey.” The sprawling adaptation of Homer’s poem is set to begin its international release on July 17, 2026.
