Charli XCX to Star in Remake of One of the Most Disturbing Horror Movies Ever, 48 Years Later

My first encounter with Faces of Death occurred when I was thirteen, tucked away at a summer sleepaway camp. Under the cover of darkness, an older cousin of a fellow camper arrived for a clandestine “special activity.” This involved ushering the boys into a cramped room to witness scenes from the 1978 cult phenomenon. Squinting at a grainy television screen linked to a weary VCR, the details were often obscured, yet the atmosphere was unmistakable: we were consuming something strictly forbidden.

That sense of witnessing something illicit and profoundly wrong is a universal experience for anyone who stumbled upon the original “shockumentary.” Orchestrated by writer-director John Alan Schwartz, the film featured Michael Carr as the unsettling pathologist Francis B. Gröss. Gröss guided viewers through a morbid gallery of supposedly real-life fatalities. The film’s dark allure rested on the ambiguity of its authenticity; while it purported to be a collection of found footage, the reality was a deceptive blend of staged sequences and genuine, gruesome archival clips.

Despite being panned by critics, Faces of Death defied expectations to become a massive financial success and a cornerstone of underground cinema. Its notoriety birthed a sprawling franchise of six sequels and various spin-offs, including a documentary specifically designed to dismantle the hoaxes of the original.

Decades later, Sony is resurrecting the brand, though with a decidedly modern meta-narrative. Moving away from the mock-documentary format, the reimagined film follows a content moderator working for an online video platform. Her task—scrubbing the internet of its most depraved content—takes a sinister turn when she discovers a subculture dedicated to meticulously recreating the infamous murders from the 1978 original. In an age dominated by deepfakes and AI-generated deception, she is forced to discern whether these new atrocities are digital fabrications or genuine acts of violence.

Directed by Daniel Goldhaber (the filmmaker behind Cam and How to Blow Up a Pipeline) and written alongside Isa Mazzei, Faces of Death (2026) boasts an impressive ensemble cast. The film stars Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Jermaine Fowler, and pop icon Charli XCX.

The marketing campaign has been as enigmatic as the film itself. On January 27, Sony surreptitiously debuted the first trailer on an obscure YouTube channel titled “sportsfan3456.” Flagged as mature content, the teaser—which must be viewed directly on YouTube—is a disorienting montage of monochromatic footage. It flickers through images of weaponry and predatory animals before pulling back to reveal a mosaic in the shape of a skull.

Whether this new iteration can capture the lightning-in-a-bottle infamy of its predecessor remains an open question. However, with Goldhaber’s track record for high-tension thrillers and a vibrant cast led by Ferreira and Charli XCX, this revival is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing horror projects of the decade.

Faces of Death arrives in theaters on April 10, 2026.
