’10 Things I Hate About You’ Heading to Broadway with Music by Carly Rae Jepsen and Script by Lena Dunham

The iconic 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You is officially making the leap from the silver screen to the Great White Way. Producer Mike Bosner has revealed that a full-scale Broadway stage adaptation is slated to begin performances on August 17, 2027. The production features a book co-penned by Golden Globe-winning writer-director Lena Dunham (Girls) and acclaimed dramatist Jessica Huang (Mother of Exiles).

Bringing sonic life to the high-school romance, Grammy-nominated pop virtuoso Carly Rae Jepsen has joined forces with Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Ethan Gruska to compose original music and lyrics. Tony Award-winning visionary Christopher Wheeldon (MJ The Musical) will direct and choreograph the production, while Pulitzer Prize and Tony winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) oversees musical arrangements, orchestrations, and supervision.

The stage version revitalizes the late-90s cinematic classic—famously adapted from William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew—which served as a career springboard for Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Set against the social battlegrounds of Padua High, the musical explores the friction between teenage conformity, sibling rivalry, and personal agency as two sisters strive to establish their own identities amid peer pressure and adolescent turmoil.

The original film etched itself into pop culture history through several defining set pieces, notably Ledger’s unforgettable grandstand rendition of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” complete with stadium bleacher acrobatics and marching band accompaniment.

Casting details, venue selection, and additional members of the creative ensemble are expected to be announced in future updates.
