Courtney Love Reveals She Nearly Died in 2019

Courtney Love has revealed to fans that her highly anticipated upcoming album is officially complete, while also shedding light on a life-threatening medical ordeal that severely compromised her health following her 2019 move from Los Angeles to the United Kingdom.

Announcing a brief hiatus from digital platforms via an Instagram video, the Hole frontwoman took the opportunity to address lingering questions regarding her unreleased material. “A lot of you are asking where my record is at. It’s done. It’s kind of been done,” Love stated, expressing deep pride in the material. “It’s a really good record. I put a lot into it.”

The alternative rock icon candidly discussed the debilitating physical deterioration that followed her relocation to London. Although she did not disclose a specific clinical diagnosis, Love described her body as having “exploded,” leading to prolonged and frequent hospitalizations. This marks a continuation of health disclosures she began in 2021, when she revealed that an acute bout of severe anemia in 2020 brought her dangerously close to death, during which she confronted significant medical bias and stigma due to her past substance struggles.

Reflecting on her past catalog, Love offered an unvarnished assessment of the commercial shortcomings surrounding Hole’s 2010 release, Nobody’s Daughter. Characterizing the era as “spectacularly humbling,” she recalled the jarring reality of performing 11:00 a.m. festival slots beneath headliners such as Limp Bizkit and 30 Seconds to Mars.

Despite past setbacks, Love conveyed genuine optimism regarding the current musical landscape, expressing strong admiration for contemporary talent. “People sound great live. The girlies are amazing,” she noted, before leaving audiences with a resolute pledge: “I will be back.”

As a foundational figure of the 1990s grunge and alternative movements, Love established Hole in Los Angeles in 1989. The band achieved critical immortality with their 1994 masterpiece Live Through This, issued shortly after the passing of her husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The group reached new commercial heights with 1998’s Celebrity Skin, which garnered four Grammy nominations and launched its title track to the top of the Modern Rock charts.

Following Hole’s initial disbandment in 2002, Love unveiled her solo debut, America’s Sweetheart, in 2004, prior to briefly resurrecting the Hole moniker with a reconstructed lineup for 2010’s Nobody’s Daughter.
