Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer John Paris Placed in Medically Induced Coma After Health Crisis
Earth, Wind & Fire Drummer John Paris in Medically Induced Coma Following Health Crisis

Earth, Wind & Fire’s longtime drummer, John Paris, has been placed in a medically induced coma following a severe health emergency earlier this month, according to updates provided by his family.
The 58-year-old musician was urgently transported to the hospital on August 6, mere moments before the legendary group was scheduled to take the stage alongside Lionel Richie at San Francisco’s Chase Center. The performance was abruptly postponed minutes ahead of showtime, with the band citing an unforeseen medical crisis involving one of its members.
First responders from the San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that emergency personnel were dispatched to the venue in response to a suspected cardiac event, transporting one patient in critical condition. While public officials noted the nature of the dispatch, the family has not formally detailed Paris’ specific diagnosis.
An official update was later published on social media by Shelly Clark White, wife of bassist Verdine White. She explained that attending physicians placed Paris into a state of induced sedation upon hospital admission to administer intensive critical care. She noted that his wife, artist Kathy Merrick, alongside their daughter, Kyla, have remained at his bedside throughout the ordeal.
During a brief window of reduced sedation, Paris momentarily regained consciousness, opened his eyes, and asked to see his wife. Demonstrating his characteristic spirit, he playfully told a close friend, “Get me outta here.” Although the family described the exchange as an uplifting moment filled with “tears, laughter, hugs and renewed hope,” Paris subsequently developed elevated blood pressure and respiratory distress, prompting medical staff to administer further sedation to stabilize his vital signs.
“John’s journey is far from over, but there is immense hope surrounding him,” the family shared. To help alleviate mounting healthcare expenses, a dedicated GoFundMe campaign was launched, rapidly gathering widespread support and contributions from both fans and fellow musicians.
The celebrated ensemble resumed its tour schedule shortly after the incident, enlisting former drummer Sonny Emory to step in for ongoing dates. The postponed San Francisco appearance has been moved to September 26.
Paris initially became a core member of Earth, Wind & Fire in 2001, contributing his rhythm section talents to studio records such as The Promise (2003) and Illumination (2005), in addition to collaborating with icons like Patti LaBelle and Sheila E. throughout his extensive career.
Originally established in Chicago in 1969 by Maurice White, Earth, Wind & Fire remains a cornerstone of American music history. Having sold north of 90 million records across the globe with their fusion of funk, soul, R&B, jazz, and pop, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees boast six Grammy Awards and enduring classics such as “Shining Star,” “September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” and “Let’s Groove.”
