Nigerian Afropop luminary Ayra Starr has captured the spotlight once again, as her third full-length studio endeavor, Starrgirl, decisively swept this week’s new music fan poll.

Following a weekend of enthusiastic voting, Starr emerged as the definitive crowd favorite. The project commanded a landslide victory, securing over 87% of the total ballots and outpacing competitive releases from an eclectic roster that included KATSEYE, Phoebe Bridgers, Troye Sivan, and Becky G.

Serving as the artistic successor to her critically lauded 2024 body of work, The Year I Turned 21, the ambitious 16-song collection signals a bold sonic evolution. Throughout the LP, Starr ventures deeper into vibrant club rhythms and velvety contemporary R&B. The tracklist includes the infectious single “Tornado,” her Grammy-nominated partnership with Wizkid on “Gimme Dat,” and high-profile collaborations featuring Zayn, Rema, Leon Thomas, and Danny Ocean.

Commemorating the release on social media, the singer reflected candidly on the growth underpinning the project, expressing deep gratitude for every chapter of her journey that helped forge the self-assured woman she is today.

“I feel like I was a different person in New York than I was in any part of the world, and I just liked who I was… It wasn’t just about work, work, work. It was about enjoying all the work I’ve done and just allowing myself to be—seeing myself from the lens of complete, and ‘I am,’ instead of ‘I have to be.’”

Elaborating on the philosophy behind the record in an interview with Variety, Starr explained that relocating to New York sparked a revitalizing chapter of self-discovery and agency. Rather than adopting a detached alter ego, she describes Starrgirl as an embrace of inherent completeness—an intentional shedding of the generational pressures often shouldered by young Black and African women.

Rounding out the poll’s top tier, KATSEYE’s upbeat anthem “WILD,” Phoebe Bridgers’ introspective project Lost Weekend, and Troye Sivan’s single “She’s the Best” also garnered notable fan support throughout the week.
