Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 — The First Game to Use AMD’s Revolutionary Ray‑Tracing Enhancement
The latest Activision and Treyarch shooter, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, is the first title to implement AMD FSR Redstone Ray Regeneration.
According to YouTuber Daniel Owen, this is a new machine‑learning denoising algorithm created to enhance the visual quality of ray‑traced effects (in this case, real‑time reflections) while keeping resource usage relatively low.
Ray Regeneration is designed to extract and restore high‑quality ray‑tracing detail, functioning similarly to NVIDIA’s DLSS Ray Reconstruction. It leverages machine learning to clean noisy ray‑traced data, resulting in clearer and more stable reflections than traditional denoisers. While the full Redstone suite will include additional features, Ray Regeneration is the first component to reach consumers.
Testing was performed on a Radeon RX 9070 XT using Black Ops 7’s built‑in benchmark at 4K, 1440p and 1080p with maximum settings, including ray‑traced reflections set to High. The results revealed more detailed reflections—particularly on water and glossy surfaces—with more accurate specular highlights and reduced blurring.
The performance hit is modest: at 4K in FSR Performance mode Ray Regeneration drops roughly 3 FPS (about 5%), while at lower resolutions the loss is only around 1–2 FPS.
