Bungie Won’t Explain Why Marathon’s Lobsters Change Color

Some of Marathon’s most perplexing enigmas have nothing to do with the mass disappearance of 50,000 human colonists or the formidable S’pht Compiler encountered within the Cryo Archive. Instead, the community is fixated on a far more peculiar oddity: why do the random lobsters found on the Dire Marsh map shift colors based on the specific Runner Shell a player has equipped?

It is an uncanny, surreal detail that feels undeniably intentional. But what purpose does it serve? When I pressed the developers about the intersection of Marathon’s design and its ARG-style marketing, the topic of the crustaceans arose spontaneously. Their evasiveness was telling. “That one’s all you, Emmanuel,” lead marketing manager Nick Clifford remarked during our call, deferring to his colleague. “That honestly surprised me as well.”

Principal producer Emanuel Rosu was even more succinct: “We do not comment on the lobsters.”

Clearly, there is more than meets the eye.

Players first flagged this phenomenon during February’s server slam. As highlighted by user @AkiAndFam on X, a single lobster might appear blue to an Assassin, red to a Triage, and green to a Destroyer. The game dynamically tracks the player’s shell, tailoring visual feedback accordingly. This suggests that Runners possess fragmented, non-synchronized perceptions of their environment, sparking theories about corrupted memories or sensory manipulation.

Intriguingly, the trio of lobster colors aligns perfectly with a cryptic in-game mural depicting a sacrificial ritual. In this scene, a blue figure mourns over fallen bodies, while a red figure impales a green one, whose essence flows into seven others. Much like the recurring pink cat, the lobsters have become a focal point for community humor. When vault space is scarce, players often jokingly reference the meme: “My steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery.”

“I’ve always appreciated the balance between the ruthless, unforgiving landscape of Tau Ceti IV and the occasional infusion of levity,” Clifford explained. “Humorous touches like the cat or the lobsters help ground the experience.”

While the lobsters could simply be a lighthearted easter egg, they might also serve as a blueprint for future mechanics. Destiny 2 often utilizes “call-out” puzzles where specific visual cues are visible only to players bearing certain buffs. It is entirely possible Bungie is testing similar logic here.

Yet, the narrative implications remain the most compelling aspect. Since Runners are digitized consciousnesses inhabiting synthetic shells, their perception is inherently fallible. Cinematics from April 2025 and the “In Death We’ve Just Begun” trailer highlight the themes of memory degradation and distorted reality. Within this framework, can any Runner trust their own eyes?

Rosu shared a story from a playtest that underscores the organic nature of these community discoveries: “I was playing solo in the Dire Marsh when a player flagged me down to show me the lobsters. He didn’t realize I was a developer; he just wanted to be the ‘lobster tour guide.’ Moments like that, which occur naturally, are incredibly meaningful.”

Whether they are a mere joke or a hint at a larger, more complex design philosophy, the lobsters confirm one unsettling truth: in Marathon, no two players share the same reality. In a world defined by fractured identities, this inconsistency feels like the precursor to a much deeper, hidden truth waiting to be uncovered.
