Nintendo presented a dedicated Direct for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, pairing a fresh trailer with several casting reveals. Brie Larson — known for roles in Captain Marvel and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World — will lend her voice to Rosalina, while filmmaker and actor Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer, The Curse; co-director of Uncut Gems) is set to voice Bowser Jr.
As with 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Illumination is collaborating closely with Nintendo on this new feature. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri joined series creator Shigeru Miyamoto during the broadcast to introduce the casting; after Larson’s role was announced, Jack Black (the voice of Bowser) unexpectedly interrupted the presentation and helped introduce Safdie’s casting.
Alongside the announcements, Nintendo premiered a new trailer and shared two short scenes that highlight Larson’s and Safdie’s performances. You can watch the trailer below.
Both actors bring distinctive tones to their characters, and the new footage gives a promising first impression. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters in April; until then, these clips are a welcome preview.
