Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is Square Enix’s second attempt to modernize the 2001 classic. The game includes numerous updates you can read about in Game Informer’s cover feature, but the core ensemble remains familiar: Hero, Maribel, Prince Kiefer, Ruff, Aishe, and Sir Mervyn—who appear on our latest magazine cover.
To help you get acquainted with the cast, we spoke with lead scenario writer Sayaka Takagi and producer Takeshi Ichikawa. Below is a concise guide to each party member based on what they shared.
Meet the Party of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined

Hero

The protagonist, simply called the Hero, is a fisherman’s son from Pilchard Bay on Estard Island. Much of his personality is shaped by player choices, but the team intentionally made him an ordinary, relatable figure — a blank slate rather than an outsized epic archetype. He’s torn between the life his parents expect and the pull of a larger destiny.
Prince Kiefer

Kiefer, the prince of Estard and the Hero’s childhood friend, is noble by birth but restless at heart. He wants to prove himself beyond royal trappings and often drags the Hero into misadventures. The team describes him as somewhat naïve and envious, yet earnest — someone searching for purpose. In battle he excels as a Warrior.
Maribel Mayde

Maribel, the mayor’s daughter from Pilchard Bay, blends a sharp tongue with loyalty. Initially brash and teasing, she becomes a dependable ally who cares deeply for the group. She’s versatile in combat — naturally gifted as a Priestess and Mage, but player-driven vocation choices let her fill many roles.
Ruff

Ruff is an upbeat, straightforward boy who travels with a loyal wolf companion. He’s innocent and instinctual, with a childlike energy comparable to classic adventure heroes. Ruff shines as a Martial Artist and brings a bright, protective presence to the party.
Aishe

Aishe is among the older members of the group and carries herself with poise and confidence. A high-ranking Roamer, she combines combat potency with charisma — able to deal heavy blows or adopt more playful support roles like Dancer or Jester. The developers emphasized her reliability and composed presence.
Sir Mervyn

Sir Mervyn is a storied paladin from an earlier age, entombed in stone until fate calls him forth. The Hero frees him, and he becomes a stalwart Paladin for the present-day party. The developers kept many of his narrative details under wraps to avoid spoiling his role.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is scheduled to launch on February 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
