The drama “Birthday,” starring Willem Dafoe, is set to hit Russian theaters on June 4, according to an announcement from production companies Sreda and Ray of Sun Pictures.

The film is adapted from the 2007 novel of the same name by Greek author Panos Karnezis. Set in the 1970s, the plot follows wealthy tycoon Marcos (Dafoe) as he hosts a birthday celebration for his only daughter, Sofia (Victoria Carmen Sonne), on his private island. Marcos conceals a mysterious and significant decision from her until the very last moment, ensuring that a heated family conflict erupts amidst the festivities.

Directed and co-written by Miguel Ángel Jiménez (“Window to the Sea”), the project also features Alexander Tsekalo as a producer. “Birthday” had its world premiere at last year’s Locarno Film Festival, where it received a polarized response from critics.
