Critics Give Jessica Chastain’s “Mothers’ Instinct” a Mixed Reception

The horror flick “Mother Land,” starring Jessica Chastain, has been met with a wave of negative reviews from international critics following its US theatrical debut this week.

As of this writing, the film holds a meager 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of just 39 out of 100 on Metacritic. Reviewers have dismissed the picture as mediocre and nonsensical, criticizing its heavy reliance on cheap jump scares and overused CGI. Many noted that while the film begins with a chilling premise, it quickly devolves into a predictable and lackluster experience. However, critics did offer praise for the Oscar-winning Chastain, drawing comparisons to Indi Navarrete’s performance in the recent thriller “Obsession.”

Adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel “Incidents Around the House,” the plot follows eight-year-old Bela as she copes with her parents’ divorce, only to see her life turn into a nightmare when a demonic entity impersonating her mother infiltrates their home. The film was directed by Rob Savage (“The Boogeyman”) and counts genre veteran James Wan (“The Conjuring,” “Insidious”) among its producers.

Despite the lukewarm critical reception, “Mother Land” is currently tracking to top the US box office this weekend. Industry experts project an impressive $27.5 million opening, a strong result against the film’s $19 million production budget, excluding marketing costs.
