Bethesda Game Studios has released an expansive update regarding its long-term development roadmap, shedding light on the future of its most iconic franchises. The studio’s latest correspondence confirms a robust pipeline for the Fallout universe, while also providing progress reports on The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield.
The Future of Fallout
Bethesda has officially confirmed that Fallout 5 is in the pre-production phase. While it remains a long-term goal, the studio reiterated that the project will follow the release of The Elder Scrolls VI. The title is slated to utilize the cutting-edge Creation Engine 3, the same technology currently fueling Bethesda’s upcoming high-fantasy epic.
Beyond the mainline series, the studio is actively developing remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Additionally, Fallout 76 is set to receive a significant expansion in 2027 titled “Raven Rock,” which serves as a prequel to the events of Fallout 3. Meanwhile, Obsidian Entertainment is reportedly pivoting to a new, secret project within the Fallout franchise, following the reported cancellation of an Avowed sequel.
To celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary in 2027, Bethesda is skipping its usual “Fallout Day” broadcast in favor of a massive in-person celebration in Washington, D.C.
Updates on Elder Scrolls and Starfield
The Elder Scrolls VI remains the studio’s primary development priority. The team reported that they are making steady progress and are actively playtesting the current build. In a push for greater internal synergy, ZeniMax Online Studios will begin working in closer tandem with the main Bethesda team to ensure a cohesive vision for the Elder Scrolls brand moving forward.
For Starfield, the journey is far from over. Bethesda confirmed that the game’s third year of post-launch support will introduce fresh narrative content, technical refinements, and the upcoming “Starborn” expansion scheduled for 2027.
Industry Restructuring
These updates emerge against the backdrop of significant organizational changes within the Xbox game division. Under CEO Asha Sharma, the division is undergoing a major “reset,” resulting in widespread layoffs and the restructuring of several prominent studios—a process that has significantly impacted teams at both id Software and Obsidian Entertainment.
