“Barbie 2” Is at Risk

Development on a follow-up to “Barbie” has ground to a halt. According to Variety, discussions regarding Greta Gerwig’s return to the director’s chair and Margot Robbie’s involvement as both lead actress and producer have stalled, casting serious doubt on whether a sequel will ever materialize.

Following the monumental success of the original “Barbie,” both Warner Bros. and Mattel were eager to reunite with Gerwig and Robbie. However, the parties have struggled to find common ground on the terms for a new project, with negotiations reportedly hitting a wall over compensation and other key financial arrangements for the primary creative team.

To date, the studio has yet to make an official announcement regarding the cancellation of the film.

This stalemate is particularly striking given the first film’s historic performance. “Barbie” stood as the definitive blockbuster of 2023, raking in over $1.4 billion at the global box office and cementing its status as one of the most profitable ventures in Warner Bros. history.
