Astarion’s Dark Past Revealed: New Baldur’s Gate 3 Prequel Novel Announced

While Larian Studios has shifted its focus from the monumental success of Baldur’s Gate 3 toward new horizons in the Divinity universe, the legacy of the Forgotten Realms remains vibrant. Fans of the acclaimed RPG have a compelling reason to revisit the coast: a dedicated prequel novel centered on the fan-favorite rogue, Astarion, is slated for release on September 29.

According to an exclusive report by Polygon, the book, titled Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion, delves into the vampire spawn’s harrowing years spent under the cruel dominion of his master, Cazador Szarr. To maintain narrative integrity and lore consistency, Larian’s senior writer Stephen Rooney served as a consultant on the project. Adding to the authenticity, Neil Newbon—whose portrayal of Astarion earned him the Best Performance accolade at The Game Awards 2023—is confirmed to narrate the official audiobook.

Author T. Kingfisher provided a candid warning via social media, emphasizing the mature tone of the story: “FOR THE RECORD – this character has a super f***** up abusive backstory. We handle it well, I think, but CONTENT WARNINGS. The book is DARK. Also, it’s a prequel, so it ends in a really dark place.”

This novel is the flagship title in a new partnership between Random House Worlds and Wizards of the Coast, aimed at expanding the deep, intricate lore of the Baldur’s Gate 3 world. The upcoming collection includes several notable releases:

• Baldur’s Gate 3: The Necromancy of Thay (July 21): A physical recreation of the iconic, sinister in-game grimoire.
• The Official Baldur’s Gate 3 Coloring Book (Late Summer): Featuring 40 intricate illustrations of the game’s settings and cast.
• A Feast for a Tenday: The Official Baldur’s Gate Cookbook (November 3): A collection of 65 recipes inspired by the culinary delights of the Sword Coast.
