Twelve years after its initial launch, one of the most technically demanding chapters in the franchise is finally breaking free from its 30 FPS limit on modern consoles. Owners of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S can download the free performance update starting March 5.
Ubisoft has surprised fans of the classic Assassin’s Creed formula with an unexpected gift. On March 5, 2026, Assassin’s Creed Unity will receive an official patch introducing native 60 frames per second support for current-generation hardware. Previously, high frame rates were the exclusive domain of PC players or Xbox users via the system-level FPS Boost feature. Until now, the PS5 version remained locked at a stagnant 30 FPS.
The reveal arrived alongside an updated roadmap for the franchise. Jean Guesdon, the newly appointed Content Lead for the series, marked the announcement with a brief statement:
When it debuted in 2014, Assassin’s Creed Unity became infamous for its rocky technical state, plagued by visual glitches and significant performance stutters. However, in the intervening years, Ubisoft addressed the majority of these flaws, and the gaming community has since undergone a major re-evaluation of the title.
Many players now regard Unity as the series’ pinnacle, specifically citing its unparalleled parkour system, massive NPC crowds, and the richly textured atmosphere of Revolutionary Paris. As noted by users on Reddit, the fluid animations and refined traversal mechanics represent the zenith of the original games’ design philosophy, making this 60 FPS patch the ultimate reason to return to the shadows.
To welcome fresh recruits, Ubisoft announced that from April 2 to April 6, Xbox owners can play Unity and several other entries for free as part of the Xbox Free Play Days initiative. Simultaneously, Steam is hosting a massive Ubisoft publisher sale, featuring discounts on the franchise of up to 90%.
