AMD Reverses Course: Company Will Keep RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 Support and Continue Releasing Game Optimizations

Following widespread backlash, AMD has reversed its plan to place RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 into “maintenance mode” and says it will continue issuing updates that include game optimizations.

AMD came under scrutiny after releasing the Adrenalin Edition 25.10.2 driver, when users noticed that RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 GPUs were omitted from the list of models receiving optimizations for newly released games.

PC Games Hardware later requested comment from AMD, and the company reportedly stated that it had intended to limit future releases for the RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 generations to critical bug fixes and security patches, rather than delivering new game optimizations or features.

Now AMD has formally denied that support is ending, telling Tom’s Hardware that new features, fixes and game optimizations will continue to be released “depending on market needs within a ‘service branch’.” The company did not specify whether updates for older GPU generations will arrive with the same frequency or in reduced volume.

In effect, AMD has backtracked on its earlier stance—likely a response to the strong negative reaction on social media. The announcement had raised concern among owners of Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards and users of RDNA 2-based handhelds such as the ROG Ally, who feared losing optimizations for upcoming games.
