Alfonso Cuarón to Direct Cult Horror-Thriller for Apple TV

Academy Award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) is set to expand his television portfolio. The filmmaker is currently developing a new horror-thriller series titled “Ascension” for the streaming platform Apple TV+.

The lead role will be played by Outlander star Caitríona Balfe. The series is based on the novel Last Days by Adam Nevill. The plot follows Rose, a documentary filmmaker who sets out to investigate the “Temple of the Last Days” cult, only to find herself increasingly drawn to its quasi-religious teachings. However, the deeper she delves into the cult’s inner workings, the more precarious her control over her own life becomes.

Both Cuarón and Balfe will serve as executive producers on the project. The screenplay is being adapted by Australian writers Natalie Erika James (Relic) and Christian White (Apartment 7A). This marks another major television venture for Cuarón, who recently released the Apple series Disclaimer, starring Cate Blanchett, in 2024.
