Ahsoka Season 2 Ties Into Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Canon
The annual D23 fan event in Anaheim, California, concluded with several major Star Wars announcements, including an update on Star Wars: Starfighter and the reveal of the trailer and release date for Ahsoka season 2. Three years have passed since Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and her Mandalorian apprentice Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) traveled to the distant planet Peridea to locate Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) and Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). While Ezra and Thrawn managed to return to the primary galaxy, Ahsoka and Sabine remained stranded behind.
The trailer for Ahsoka season 2 showcases the fallout of that return as Thrawn openly declares war on the New Republic. Viewers familiar with Star Wars Rebels and the Thrawn novels recognize the tactical threat he poses, prompting some fans to question how these events fit alongside the sequel trilogy. If the New Republic faced a direct conflict against Thrawn, questions arise about why the subsequent films never reference the campaign and why the galactic government appeared so unprepared for Imperial remnants decades later.
Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return explained
Lucasfilm has laid the groundwork for Thrawn’s resurgence across multiple stories. Thrawn and Ezra vanished in 1 BBY when Ezra used the Force to summon purrgil, the hyperspace-traveling space whales, to pull Thrawn’s flagship into another galaxy. Following the defeat of the Galactic Empire in 5 ABY, Imperial warlords continued organizing in secret to dismantle the New Republic. These efforts tie into Emperor Palpatine’s broader contingency plans, which were detailed in the single-player campaign of EA’s 2017 video game Star Wars: Battlefront 2.

As depicted in seasons 2 and 3 of The Mandalorian, Imperial remnant leaders such as Brendol Hux viewed Thrawn’s return as the catalyst needed to restore the regime. While marooned on Peridea, Thrawn repaired his Star Destroyer and allied with the Great Mothers, the Nightsisters of Dathomir, using their dark magic to secure his journey home and assume his role as Heir to the Empire.
Why Thrawn is not mentioned in the sequels

The Ahsoka season 2 footage highlights the impending confrontation involving Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Garazeb Orrelios (Steve Blum), and Ezra Bridger as they mobilize against Thrawn’s forces. Even so, the broader galaxy in the sequel trilogy appears convinced that Imperial threats were long neutralized.
Narrative details across the franchise explain this apparent disconnect. Star Wars: The Force Awakens establishes that the New Republic government grew deeply complacent after demilitarizing its fleet and focusing on localized threats like pirates. By that era, General Leia Organa had to form the private Resistance because the galactic senate refused to act against the emerging First Order. When Starkiller Base obliterated Hosnian Prime, the New Republic lacked the centralized military defense needed to protect itself.

Supporting media reinforces this political blind spot. Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath novel trilogy illustrates how premature declarations of peace allowed Imperial remnants to regroup unnoticed. In Ahsoka, New Republic senators openly dismiss warnings regarding Thrawn, while The Mandalorian reveals former Imperial operatives infiltrating government ranks through the Amnesty Program. In Claudia Gray’s novel Bloodline, systemic corruption and political scandals force Leia to resign from the senate, paving the way for her to build the Resistance independently.
The New Republic’s dismissal of lingering Imperial dangers matches the institutional failures depicted throughout the timeline. Thrawn’s renewed offensive fits within this established history rather than contradicting the events of the sequel era.
Ahsoka season 2 premieres on Disney Plus on January 20, 2027.
