Acclaimed Action-RPG Muramasa: The Demon Blade Returns in 2027 With Stunning Remake
Vanillaware’s beloved action-RPG masterpiece, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, is making a triumphant return in 2027 with a comprehensive 4K remaster tailored for modern hardware. Subtitled Muramasa: Revenant Blades, this definitive iteration of the cult-classic Wii and PlayStation Vita favorite introduces a fresh localization alongside an abundance of enhanced and brand-new features.
Getting my hands on Muramasa: Revenant Blades for a brief hour at a Tokyo Game Show showcase last month instantly catapulted the title to the top of my most-anticipated list. It effortlessly combines frenetic hack-and-slash combat with intricate fighting mechanics and, true to Vanillaware’s signature style, breathtaking hand-drawn aesthetics—complete with staggeringly appetizing depictions of traditional Japanese cuisine.
A Timeless Masterpiece from the Wii Era
Image: Vanillaware/Marvelous EntertainmentOriginally published by Vanillaware and Marvelous Entertainment for the Nintendo Wii in 2009—and later ported to the PlayStation Vita in 2013—the original release established itself as a premier 2D side-scrolling action-RPG. Blending Metroidvania-style exploration with arcade-inspired combat, the game transports players to Edo-period Japan. Assuming the roles of dual protagonists Momohime and Kisuke, players navigate stunning, period-accurate environments while fending off rogue ninja, honor-bound samurai, corrupt priests, and mythical yokai.
At its core, Muramasa places equal emphasis on atmospheric exploration and pulse-pounding swordplay. Set against the backdrop of Honshu, the narrative revolves around a bloody territorial dispute over supernatural blades forged by the legendary master Senji Muramasa. Imbued with immense power and a maddening bloodlust, these cursed weapons draw various supernatural factions into an all-out war. While Momohime and Kisuke embark on this perilous quest for deeply personal reasons, their journeys are further enriched by four additional playable protagonists.
Jumping into Muramasa: Revenant Blades immediately thrusts you into the thick of battle. Exploring Honshu as Momohime during my demo, I was quickly surrounded by overwhelming hordes of phantoms, imps, and rival shinobi converging from all angles. Fortunately, her arsenal is well-equipped for crowd control: a nimble short sword facilitates lightning-fast combo strings, while a heavier long blade delivers devastating, deliberate strikes, complemented by a versatile suite of special combat techniques. Marvelous and Vanillaware have confirmed that players will be able to forge 100 distinct swords and master dozens of upgradeable skills.
Standout techniques include the Haze Splitter, a swift flanking maneuver that slices targets twice; the Moonslash, which launches an arc of destructive energy; and the Moonbeam, a rising upward cut that releases a shockwave. These maneuvers prove indispensable when trying to escape dire circumstances.
Weapons are subject to wear and tear, occasionally shattering under heavy stress. This demands a tactical approach to combat, requiring players to balance guarding, striking, and seamlessly swapping to a secondary blade to let a broken weapon regenerate. Although powerful abilities operate on cooldown timers, the momentum of combat never falters. The swordplay feels exceptionally fluid, anchored by precise controls and immediate visual feedback that makes every exchange intensely satisfying.
The adventure also offers quieter, contemplative intervals where characters converse with townsfolk, trade gear, or indulge in regional culinary delights. Stopping by a local teahouse, Momohime feasted on traditional sweets like tri-color dango, mochi, and vibrant fruit jellies—showcasing Vanillaware’s trademark flair for delightfully bouncy sprite animations.
My session concluded just as I was getting comfortable with the intricate combat rhythm. Given the massive scope of unlockable weapons, specialized skills, equipment sets, and culinary recipes, I barely scratched the surface. My preview offered merely a glimpse into Honshu’s expansive geography, which spans hidden caverns, tranquil coastlines, and surreal mythological realms.
