33 Years Later, a Beloved Pair of SNES RPGs Are Finally Getting Remakes

The early 1990s 16-bit era remains universally celebrated as a golden age for role-playing games, spawning timeless masterpieces like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Earthbound, and Secret of Mana. However, numerous beloved titles from the Super Nintendo generation have unfortunately grown exceedingly difficult to track down today. Fortunately, that narrative is shifting for at least one underappreciated franchise. Publisher Taito has joined forces with Swedish publisher Clear River Games to bring Lufia 1 & 2: The Sinistrals Saga to Windows PC and modern consoles in 2027.

Lufia 1 and 2 stand tall among the greatest SNES RPGs ever created

Kicking off the duology, 1993’s Lufia and the Fortress of Doom begins with a high-stakes battle featuring four legendary champions—Maxim, Selan, Artea, and Guy—who must scale a looming sky fortress to vanquish a quartet of supreme antagonists known as the Sinistrals. True to RPG traditions, the floating stronghold collapses following the villains’ defeat, leaving Maxim and Selan behind while their companions manage to escape. A century of peace follows until the narrative shifts to one of Maxim’s descendants and his childhood companion, Lufia. Together, they embark on a journey to once again rescue the realm from impending doom, proving that sealing away ancient malice rarely stays a permanent solution.

Similar to Konami’s recent Suikoden 1+2 remaster, the original Lufia serves primarily as an appetizing introduction before diving into the main event. Lufia 2 is widely regarded as the more compelling and influential entry in the series. While the first installment offered a fairly conventional, turn-based experience akin to Dragon Quest, the sequel elevated dungeon crawling through clever environmental puzzles involving bombs, arrows, and grappling hooks. Furthermore, Lufia 2 introduced a charming, Pokémon-inspired “capsule monster” system, allowing players to incorporate elemental creatures as a fifth party member and nurture them with gear and items to evolve their abilities.

The collection also dips its toes into roguelike territory via the Ancient Cave—an optional, 99-floor dungeon featuring procedurally generated layouts that change entirely with every run. Inside, your party members are stripped of their experience, starting out with minimal gear and inventory. Recognizing that the backstory of the original four heroes resonated much deeper with fans than the main plot of the first game, the developers cleverly framed this prequel around Maxim and his comrades.

Lufia 1 & 2 The Sinistrals Saga is scheduled for a digital release in 2027 across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC, with Clear River Games also planning physical console editions.
