Following its release last year, The Alters quickly solidified its place as a standout title of 2025, even if it pushed players to their limits with its high-stakes tension. While a free December update introduced a fresh mystery and several quality-of-life enhancements, 11 Bit Studios had much larger ambitions in store. During Saturday’s Future Games Show, the team unveiled a substantial expansion for The Alters—a content drop so ambitious it feels like an entirely separate game.

Set in the aftermath of the main campaign, The Alters: Last Variable shifts the spotlight to "Jan Scientist." Having elected to stay behind while his counterparts escaped their perilous, alien-inhabited home, Jan Scientist turns his focus toward exploring the enigmatic "Oasis," a region teeming with exotic, lush flora. True to the series' DNA, he won't be tackling this research solo; he’ll be accompanied by specialized clones, including a Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, and Physicist, each essential for unlocking the planet's secrets.

As you terraform the landscape to harvest new resources and mitigate looming threats, survival remains paramount. You’ll need to construct a new Cryosleep Chamber to withstand the harsh environment. However, based on recent announcements, it appears only Jan Scientist will be enjoying the stasis, while the other versions of himself continue their grueling labor. As history tells us, relying on clones to endure while you sleep rarely ends well.

Clocking in with a 20-hour campaign, The Alters: Last Variable is far from a trivial add-on. Considering the base game spans roughly 25 hours, this expansion offers a depth comparable to a standalone sequel.

You won't need a completed save file to dive into Last Variable, as it will be available directly from the main menu. However, developers suggest players spend some time with the base game first, as this expansion skips the foundational tutorials to throw you straight into the challenge.

The Alters places players in the shoes of Jan Dolski, a space miner stranded on a hostile world. By creating clones of himself—all voiced by the versatile Alex Jordan—Jan must navigate internal strife and external danger to escape. The game earned a spot on Polygon’s 50 best games of 2025, with our critic Marloes Valentina Stella noting: "Choosing which alters to create and how to handle their interpersonal friction, all while reflecting on the protagonist’s troubled past and the moral ambiguities of cloning, is what makes The Alters such a remarkable experience."

The Alters: Last Variable is slated for release on July 13. Pricing details will be shared closer to the launch date.
