Disney’s Zootopia 2 burst onto the global scene with a staggering $556.4 million haul in its opening weekend — the largest debut ever for an animated feature and the fourth-highest weekend opening of all time, behind only Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
On the animated front it eclipsed the previous record held by the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2, which had been the highest-grossing animated film worldwide. A major reason for Zootopia 2’s extraordinary launch is its enormous performance in China: approximately $271.6 million of the international opening came from that market, marking one of the largest openings for a non‑Chinese release in the country (second only to Endgame).
Stateside, the film opened to roughly $156 million — a Thanksgiving weekend result surpassed only by Disney’s own Moana 2 — and outpaced other recent tentpoles such as the 2025 A Minecraft Movie, the Lilo & Stitch remake, and Wicked: For Good in its initial frame.
Put simply, Zootopia 2 is a cultural and commercial juggernaut. Its blockbuster debut — together with a solid follow-up weekend for Wicked: For Good — offers welcome momentum for cinemas after a sluggish start to the fall 2025 box office season.
And yes: it’s also a delight to watch. For a full critical take, see the review here.
