Yorgos Lanthimos Doubts He Will Continue His Directing Career

Renowned Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, the creative force behind Poor Things, has opened up about his enduring passion for photography, a medium he is currently showcasing at a new exhibition in Los Angeles.

Lanthimos notes that photography provides a refreshing, low-stress alternative to the grueling demands of directing motion pictures. The Oscar-nominated auteur even went so far as to express uncertainty regarding his long-term commitment to cinema.

“You can simply wander around with a camera; it is a solitary, almost meditative practice. You aren’t tethered to a rigid concept or a definitive goal, nor do you have to secure financing. In those moments, I find myself wondering, ‘Will I continue to make films? I’m not sure; we’ll see.’ I need to rediscover the joy in filmmaking. I want it to happen organically rather than forcing myself,”

— Lanthimos shared in an interview with the Financial Times. His latest project, the science-fiction feature Bugonia, was released in 2025 and garnered four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Following the film’s debut, Lanthimos announced his intention to take a hiatus from his directing career.
