The developer dismissed the fans’ joke that he has been “doing nothing”.
Yoko Taro pushed back against the widespread fan joke that he has “done nothing” in recent years. During a panel at the G-CON 2025 gaming conference in Korea, Taro revealed that since the release of NieR: Automata in 2017 he has been actively involved in several projects, but none reached completion after being canceled partway through development.
I often get asked, “Why don’t you make a NieR sequel?” or told, “Yoko Taro isn’t doing anything.” That’s because many of the projects I contributed to were canceled midway.
Taro noted that he was compensated for his work, so he bears no hard feelings.
The developer declined to go into the reasons for the cancellations — most likely to avoid breaching non-disclosure agreements.
I don’t see anything wrong with that. If what I’d release would be strange, it’s better not to release it at all.
