Xbox’s New CEO Struggles to Establish Gamer Credibility

Late last week, the gaming industry was shaken by the news that Phil Spencer, the long-standing face of Xbox, is stepping down after a 25-year tenure. His successor, Asha Sharma, moves into the role from her previous position as the head of Microsoft’s CoreAI division.

The transition sparked immediate debate among the fanbase, with many expressing concern over the platform’s future as AI integration becomes increasingly controversial. Furthermore, Sharma has faced a wave of criticism from those questioning her credentials within the gaming world.

During a recent exchange on X with a skeptical follower, Sharma shared her gamertag to demonstrate her engagement with the ecosystem. However, eagle-eyed observers quickly noted that the very first achievement on her profile was recorded on January 15, 2026—roughly five weeks ago. This suggests her journey into the Xbox library began only recently.

To her credit, Sharma has spent the last month immersing herself in some of the platform’s most iconic titles. She began with Halo: The Master Chief Collection—a logical starting point for anyone representing the brand—before moving on to Forza Horizon 5, Minecraft, and Fallout 76. Her profile also reveals a penchant for narrative-driven indie games; she has fully completed Firewatch and is just a few achievements shy of finishing What Remains of Edith Finch and A Short Hike.

Curiously, the 2025 rogue-like Ball X Pit appears to be her primary focus. She has already logged 42 hours in the game over an eight-day period, nearly maximizing its achievement list. It seems Sharma has utilized her transition period between roles to conduct an intensive “crash course” in the brand’s software offerings.

This rapid-fire immersion has led some to wonder if she is actually the one behind the controller. While women in the industry have frequently been subjected to unfair gatekeeping, it is entirely possible that Sharma simply caught the gaming bug late and leaned in with enthusiasm. Whether a leader needs to be a lifelong gaming veteran to run Xbox effectively is a point of contention, but replacing Spencer—who famously maintained a Gamerscore exceeding 120,000—was always going to be an intimidating task.

Skepticism remains high, with some online communities speculating that her social media presence is being managed by AI. Adding to the friction are rumors suggesting Spencer’s departure might not have been as voluntary as the official press release implied. “I’ve been told something that suggests this was not a planned move,” Greg Miller mentioned during a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Games podcast. Such whispers only make Sharma’s path to legitimacy more difficult.

Earning the trust of the Xbox community will be a steep climb, particularly as the brand navigates a period of mixed results. While heavy hitters like Fable and Forza Horizon 6 are slated for release this year, the platform’s recent track record has left some fans wanting more. Although Sharma’s attempts to connect with players appear earnest, the community seems hesitant to grant her the benefit of the doubt. Only her future decisions will determine if she can successfully lead the brand forward.
