Woody and Buzz Lightyear vs. a Tablet Computer? First Toy Story 5 Trailer Is Here

Thirty years after the original Toy Story put Pixar on the map and introduced Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) to audiences, the franchise is returning with a fifth installment. The first teaser for Toy Story 5 landed on Tuesday, offering a tantalizing glimpse of the premise while leaving the question of how it follows Toy Story 4 unanswered.

The trailer centers on Bonnie — the child who inherited Andy’s toys — receiving a brand-new plaything: a frog-shaped tablet. Bonnie is enchanted by the device, and while it seems likely the tablet will animate in the same way as her other toys, the established gang treats it as an existential threat — a possible replacement for the cherished, analog playthings they know.

What the teaser omits is any clear explanation for Woody’s presence back in Bonnie’s room. At the conclusion of Toy Story 4, Woody left with Bo Peep (Annie Potts) to travel with a carnival and help toys find better homes, so his sudden reappearance here raises immediate questions.

Pixar will almost certainly address Woody’s return, but the teaser’s silence invites speculation: did Bo Peep rejoin him? Is Woody on his own? And where does Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves) fit into this new chapter?

There are, however, continuity cues that link the films. Before departing in the previous movie, Woody entrusted his sheriff’s badge to Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack). In the teaser the badge is visible on her shirt — a small detail that suggests Jessie remains the toys’ de facto leader in Bonnie’s room.

Toy Story 5 is scheduled to open in theaters on June 19, 2026.
