Wonder Man Trailer Unveils Marvel’s Most Meta TV Show Yet

Marvel appears to be leaning into the idea of superhero exhaustion — the studio’s new series practically winks at the concept of “superhero fatigue.” Read more on superhero fatigue.

The first trailer for Wonder Man has dropped, and it frames the series as a self-aware, meta reflection on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The trailer premiered on October 10, 2025 — arriving less than a day after the Peacemaker season 2 finale — and it quietly shifted Wonder Man from a late-2025 release window to January 2026. Watch the trailer, then read the analysis below.

The trailer itself reveals little about the series’ plot and instead centers on an in-universe interview with an enigmatic director named Von Kovak (played by Zlatko Burić). Kovak announces plans to remake the film Wonder Man and explains his rationale, interrupting his interviewer to say:

“Why one more superhero film? Everyone is tired of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reimagine the whole genre of storytelling.”

The interviewer responds, “Have you given any thought about casting?” The trailer then cuts to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II — who plays the series’ lead — watching the exchange on his phone, and the preview ends on that moment.

We already knew Wonder Man would adopt a meta approach. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes the superhero Wonder Man. The supporting cast includes Ben Kingsley reprising Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (the Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon’s agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed as P. Cleary of the Department of Damage Control.

Plot specifics remain scarce, but the tone is unmistakably self-referential. After the industry-shaking reception to Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel appears comfortable leaning into meta-humor. Whether that approach lands without the particular star chemistry of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is an open question — one we’ll have to wait to answer when the series arrives in January 2026.
