Windrose Devblog: Ashlands (Work in Progress)

DEVELOPER NOTE: The following information outlines our current development roadmap. Please keep in mind that our creative process is highly iterative; we frequently experiment with new mechanics and pivot based on playtesting results. If a feature doesn’t enhance the core gameplay experience, we aren’t afraid to refine or replace it. These plans represent our current vision, which will continue to evolve as development progresses.

Greetings, Captains! Your enthusiasm since our Early Access launch has been nothing short of extraordinary. Thank you for being such an integral part of this journey.

With our post-launch stability updates largely complete, the team is now fully focused on Windrose’s first major content expansion: Ashlands. While this project is still in its infancy, we wanted to pull back the curtain and share our vision for the horizon.

Windrose Devblog: Ashlands (Work in Progress)

Regarding our long-term goals, we are intentionally keeping them flexible. Our priority during the launch phase was to provide the best possible player experience, which demanded everything we had. Now that the game is in your hands, we are gathering invaluable feedback that is helping us crystallize our future vision. Windrose is a collaborative effort—shaped as much by your experiences as by our initial design goals. We aim to deliver the Ashlands update with the highest level of quality, analyze your impressions, and then build toward the next phase of our journey.

Here is what you can expect from the Ashlands update.

The Saga Continues

We’ve always envisioned Windrose as a survival adventure with a rich, immersive narrative. The Ashlands update will significantly deepen this layer, expanding both our main storyline and side-quest arcs.

Prepare to encounter new factions whose shifting allegiances and ulterior motives will complicate your survival. Your quest for the Obol fragments leads you to the haunting ruins of a lost Spanish colony. The residual power of the Obol has scarred these volcanic lands, making the environment more perilous than ever—and you aren’t the only ones hunting for this artifact. Rest assured, your current save data will remain compatible with these new additions.

New Horizon: The Ashlands

We are introducing a massive fourth biome: the Ashlands. This region, forever altered by ancient volcanic activity, holds long-forgotten secrets waiting to be unearthed from the dust. Expect an entirely new suite of islands, formidable enemies, crafting materials, and a challenging new boss encounter. We are also experimenting with unique mechanics to ensure the Ashlands offers a distinct gameplay rhythm compared to our existing biomes.

Bases and Construction

The creativity shown by our community has been inspiring. To support your architectural ambitions, we are adding a wide variety of decorations, new building pieces, and several quality-of-life improvements. We are also looking into expanding the role of camp NPCs to make your bases feel more alive. Don’t forget to head over to our community ideas board to help us prioritize new features: Windrose Support & Ideas.

Naval Expansion

Ships are the heart of Windrose, and we have significant plans to improve the sailing experience based on your feedback. While we can’t fit everything into one update, here is our current focus:

  • Deepening the ship-to-ship gameplay loop.
  • Introducing new ship classes, including at least one debut for the Ashlands update.
  • Refining combat encounters and ship-to-ship skirmishes.
  • Upgrading AI behavior, such as coordinated formation sailing and more reactive NPC vessels.

Regarding the frequently requested “wind mechanics”: we are actively exploring this. Our goal is to implement a system that feels engaging without veering into overly tedious “hardcore” simulation. Finally, yes—there will be more sea shanties! We were touched by how much you enjoyed the soundtrack, and we have plenty more to add to your repertoire.

Final Thoughts

This is the direction we are heading with Ashlands. If you have questions, please share them in the comments—we plan to host a Q&A session in the near future to address your curiosities. We will provide updates on timing as development continues. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you on the high seas!

Fair winds,
The Kraken Express Team
