While we are well aware that you are brimming with inquiries—particularly regarding that enigmatic final segment—all in due time! Moving forward, our goal is to provide regular, in-depth insights into everything arriving with the Ashlands update. This represents our very first major milestone patch. Following countless hours of reviewing your invaluable feedback, drafting prototypes, experimenting with mechanics, and determining optimal solutions, the overall scope of the update is finally solidified. Though numerous features are still actively under development, we already have a wealth of exciting details to share.

Therefore, the moment has arrived to pull back the curtain and discuss the philosophy guiding our design decisions. As always, your critiques, thoughts, and suggestions are profoundly appreciated, so please share your perspectives with us.

Our inaugural port of call: vessels. More specifically, advanced ship customization. Naval mechanics have consistently ranked among the most intensely debated and fiercely requested aspects of Windrose, and we are thrilled to introduce deeper avenues for personalizing your seafaring craft.

Forging Your Vessel’s Identity

First, allow us to outline our fundamental philosophy regarding ships.

As many of you observed, ship customizability was still in its infancy when Windrose first entered Early Access. Expanding upon this foundation was always our explicit intention, yet the moment we began developing the expansion, several structural limitations within the current implementation immediately surfaced.

Presently, faction-specific ship variants exist for two major groups: the Brethren of the Coast and Blackbeard’s Crew. On paper, this framework endows each faction with a distinct visual signature. In practice, however, the system proved far more restrictive than intended:

  • Customization boundaries were remarkably tight. Faction-locked hulls and sails already consumed the vast majority of visual variance per ship, severely narrowing the opportunities for individual expression.
  • Customization options frequently conflicted. Certain exterior components were irrevocably bound to specific faction templates, meaning any alteration to your vessel’s overarching aesthetic usually forced a complete switch to an entirely different faction model.
  • Windrose features significantly more than two factions. While every faction boasts its own unmistakable character and aesthetic, engineering distinct ship variants for every single faction would exponentially multiply the number of hulls, visual assets, balancing variables, and cross-combinations we must develop and support. The further we scaled this architecture, the more difficult maintenance would become—all while offering surprisingly meager actual freedom to the player.

Put simply, the legacy system was overly rigid and cumbersome to expand sustainably. Guided by your constructive feedback, we resolved to rebuild the entire framework from the keel up.

Our new direction steers away from predefined faction hulls, favoring a broader, infinitely more flexible approach to both visual and mechanical customization. Practically speaking, this translates to several monumental shifts in how ship configuration functions:

  • We are retiring predefined faction-specific ship models. Rather than choosing between a generic vessel and specialized Brethren of the Coast or Blackbeard’s Crew variations, you will simply select your desired ship class and tailor it directly from there. Constructing a Ketch, for instance, grants access to the exhaustive pool of customization options specific to that class—nullifying the need for separate faction-locked editions.
  • Exterior aesthetics will become expansive and modular. Visual features previously restricted to specific faction hulls are transitioning into a unified customization suite alongside brand-new elements currently in development. Our vision is to empower you to mix and match distinct visual components rather than forcing them into rigid, pre-packaged combinations.
  • Interior customization is receiving a massive evolution. You will soon be empowered to outfit your ship’s hold with both functional and decorative installations, transforming an otherwise hollow interior into a tailored workspace that directly accommodates your preferred playstyle. This particular feature serves as the primary focus of today’s developer diary.
  • We are actively engineering new gameplay systems tethered directly to your vessel. This includes investigating ways to make your crew feel more dynamically integrated into your ship’s setup, alongside expanding tactical uses for your cannons and broader interactions with ship mechanics. These concepts require a bit more development time before we showcase them publicly, but we will dive deep into the specifics once they mature.

As mentioned previously, a direct consequence of this design pivot is that existing faction-specific ship variants will be phased out. We understand this immediately raises concerns regarding your current fleets, so we will outline a dedicated migration path once those logistical details are finalized. Rest assured, your hard-earned progress remains safe; all resources spent on dismantled ships will be comprehensively refunded.

For today, however, our journey takes us beneath the deck.

On the Open Ocean, Your Ship is Your Sanctuary

A recurring sentiment echoed throughout the community is the deep-seated desire for enhanced methods to truly claim your vessel as your own.

Therefore, while our overarching customization overhaul encompasses the entire craft, today we shine a spotlight on one specific zone: the cargo hold. Our goal is to bridge the utility of your land-based outposts directly onto your maritime vessel, catering particularly to captains who prefer spending extended campaigns at sea. After all, when traversing the treacherous Archipelago, your ship functions as your primary base of operations, your refuge, and your home away from home.

Practically, this means gaining the ability to install vital utility fixtures below decks, such as functional workbenches and cooking hearths. This initial selection represents just our starting lineup—if there are alternative installations you wish to utilize aboard your ship, be sure to voice your ideas in the comments section.

We are additionally exploring the implementation of supplementary storage containers that can be placed aboard ships alongside standard cargo holds. While these may not function identically to your primary inventory—meaning you perhaps cannot access them remotely through the Flagship menu—they will provide substantially more volume to store and transport vital provisions.

Over time, this system will likely expand further to introduce dedicated crafting modules and utility upgrades.

Naturally, not every addition must serve a purely utilitarian purpose. We are equally committed to providing aesthetic customization options, ensuring the interior space feels less like a sterile, transitional corridor and more like a personalized living quarter.

Certain modules you install may even yield direct functional benefits to the vessel, introducing fresh tactical layers to your preparation. You might ready your ship for a grueling expedition into uncharted biomes, reallocate space strictly for cargo to maximize a lucrative trade expedition, or fortify your hull before hunting down hostile rivals on the high seas. The strategic choice is yours.

Customization Option 1
Customization Option 2

There is, however, one critical design limitation to keep in mind: unlike terrestrial building zones where placement is completely unrestricted, ships will feature a finite allotment of designated construction nodes.

This is a deliberate, calculated design choice.

Naval vessels rank among the most computationally intricate entities within Windrose, synthesizing dozens of deeply intertwined mechanical and visual engines. They are equally demanding concerning hardware performance and optimization tolerances. Integrating an entirely unrestricted, free-form building system atop these existing systems would introduce catastrophic performance overhead—a compromise we are unwilling to accept.

Furthermore, we strive to preserve the authentic silhouette and architectural integrity of a classic sailing ship, ensuring that navigation through already cramped interior corridors remains fluid and comfortable for both solo players and active crews.

We will continuously endeavor to grant as much structural freedom as reasonably possible, having heard your impassioned pleas for greater versatility loud and clear. Nevertheless, fully free-form construction aboard floating hulls is not a direction we intend to pursue.

Ultimately, our vision transforms your vessel from a simple mechanical conveyance moving you between islands into something far greater. For those enamored with life on the waves, it will organically evolve into a floating nexus for preparation, organization, crafting, provisioning, and strategic adaptation tailored to your chosen voyage.

We pour immense passion and dedication into designing our ships. They form the beating heart of the Windrose fantasy, and we want this facet of the experience to resonate as deeply with you as it does with our development team. Should naval warfare not align with your preferred playstyle, worry not; you will still utilize ships much as you always have, or configure them specifically to support the facets of the game you cherish most.

As always: your ship, your epic traversal across the Archipelago, and your unique style of play. Our absolute duty is to expand your agency and ensure every decision feels exceptionally rewarding.
