Voyage to the Ashlands: Ship Customization, Part 2

Ahoy, Captains!

Time certainly flies, and we are thrilled to welcome you back for another exclusive preview of what awaits in the upcoming Ashlands update. Whether you are a newcomer stepping onto the deck for the very first time or a seasoned voyager who has charted these waters with us in Windrose before, it is fantastic to have you here.

This installment marks the second chapter in our deep-dive series exploring the extensive nautical overhauls arriving with Ashlands. If you happened to miss our first broadcast, you can catch up here, where we outlined our overarching philosophy on vessel design and detailed the upcoming enhancements to interior customization.

Today, however, we are turning our attention outward.

As we have previously teased, exterior vessel customization is expanding to offer vastly improved flexibility. Several visual components previously locked behind specific faction hulls are transitioning into a universal customization network, complemented by brand-new elements currently in development. Our ultimate goal is to grant you unprecedented creative freedom over your ship’s silhouette, ensuring it feels distinctly and unmistakably yours.

So, if style is at the very core of your seafaring identity, you are bound to appreciate what is on the horizon.

The overhauled system grants granular control over every facet of your vessel’s exterior. By introducing a greater number of customization slots, independently selectable parts, and deeper color-blending capabilities, the entire aesthetic workflow is transforming. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect:

First, we are expanding individual customization slots. Key architectural components such as the figurehead, hull ornaments, stern plates, and helm—previously bound strictly to predefined faction blueprints—are now completely modular. In Ashlands, these pieces will be decoupled from their original sets, empowering you to mix and match elements to craft a truly bespoke vessel.

Instead of inheriting a rigid factional identity, you can cherry-pick your favorite visual components from various designs and weave them together into a singular, cohesive masterpiece.

Second, players retain the freedom to select their sails and banners independently. Because these elements form the core of a ship’s recognizable silhouette from afar, keeping them modular remains a cornerstone of the entire system.

After all, what kind of true captain commands a vessel without choosing the exact colors they fly under? Hardly a captain worth their salt!

Third, you will gain access to custom color palettes for all aforementioned components. This introduces an entirely new tier of personalization: two vessels utilizing the exact same structural layouts can project radically different moods and personalities depending on the paint schemes you choose.

Fourth, these dynamic additions are accompanied by sweeping interface redesigns. To effortlessly accommodate the influx of new slots, visuals, and color combinations, our UI has been streamlined to keep your options clear, organized, and remarkably intuitive to navigate.

We have carefully restructured the menu layout so that you can experiment seamlessly without feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of prospective choices.

Finally, we are introducing a dedicated customization camera. Previously, altering a ship relied heavily on static preview renders, making it difficult to judge how specific parts would look organically on the open water. The new camera system lets you inspect your vessel directly in-game while implementing changes, allowing you to pan, zoom, and evaluate every minute detail from any angle.

Given the wealth of newly customizable elements, we felt it crucial to provide a comprehensive, real-time preview environment before you commit your hard-earned assets to a design.

Please keep in mind that everything shown here represents a work in progress. As development rolls forward, we will continue refining and optimizing these systems, guided heavily by your invaluable feedback, commentary, and impressions. As always, we are immensely excited to witness what you create once these tools land in your capable hands.

Taken as a whole, these systemic upgrades are designed to eliminate unnecessary restrictions in ship personalization while faithfully preserving the iconic aesthetic identity Windrose players know and love. Traditional faction designs will remain a brilliant source of inspiration and thematic grounding, but individual components are no longer shackled together merely because they originated on the same hull.

Ultimately, our mission is to ensure your vessel feels unequivocally like your vessel—not just in the utility spaces you build below deck, but in the commanding presence it holds while docked in port or looming menacingly on the distant horizon.

Rest assured, our conversation about ships doesn’t stop here. We have plenty more exciting revelations regarding the broader naval rework to share as we draw closer to the release of Ashlands. Until that day arrives, start pondering how you plan to balance elegance, raw character, and just the right amount of intimidation.

Yours in style,
— Kraken Express
