Why I Count Myself Among the Million Haters of Clint from Stardew Valley
Discovering that Pelican Town’s own Clint has been tapped as a fresh romantic prospect for the 1.7 update left me utterly floored. My immediate, visceral reaction—shouting “That incel?!”—fueled a night of incredulous fixation. If Clint’s detractors number in the millions, I am surely their leader; if he has none, it is because I am no longer of this world. Yet, after sleeping on the revelation, I’ve begun to entertain a different perspective: perhaps this is precisely the point. Clint, more than anyone else in Stardew Valley, is a man in desperate search of a redemption arc.
The local blacksmith has long been a lightning rod for player frustration, primarily due to his unrequited and often unsettling fixation on Emily. His early heart events are particularly grating; he solicits dating advice from the player only to crumble into debilitating awkwardness at the saloon, eventually retreating into a self-pitying spiral where he claims to be “doomed.” This defeatist attitude, coupled with a palpable “nice guy” energy that bristles at any perceived slight, has cemented his reputation as one of the game’s most polarizing and occasionally creepy figures.
I certainly wasn’t alone in my dismay. The community erupted with everything from wistful pleas for the Wizard’s hand to scathing memes regarding the news. One X user quipped about the sheer exhaustion of finishing a grueling shift only to find Clint on the bachelorette market. However, a more measured conversation has surfaced amidst the vitriol, suggesting that this move might actually be a stroke of genius.
Some fans point to Haley’s character arc as a potential blueprint. While she begins her journey as shallow and dismissive, she eventually undergoes a profound softening—a process one Reddit user described as “power-leveling Haley so she sucks less as a person.” Clint possesses a similar potential for growth, though he faces a steeper climb due to the profound “ick” factor he triggers in a large portion of the player base.
Personally, I’ve always found Haley’s initial snobbery easier to stomach than Clint’s boundary-crossing obsession with a woman who clearly doesn’t share his feelings. It is a dynamic that strikes a chord with many players, leading to a more visceral rejection of him than of the town’s resident mean girl. This inherent distaste presents a significant hurdle for his appeal as a husband, yet it serves as the primary reason why the character needs to evolve beyond his current state.
I will admit that despite my frequent complaints about Clint’s behavior, he does evoke a certain degree of pity. Setting aside the moments where he is found lurking in Emily’s shrubbery, he is fundamentally a lonely, isolated individual. As one Reddit user insightfully noted, he is a man yearning for a connection where he is finally chosen—a narrative opportunity that this candidacy provides. He is searching for the fulfillment he lacks, which remains perpetually out of reach while he fixates on Emily.
While a romantic path with Clint may not suit every Stardew Valley player, it certainly has its place in the game’s ecosystem. I remain skeptical that I’ll ever personally walk down the aisle with the blacksmith, but ConcernedApe’s track record for nuanced character writing is undeniable. Like the expansions before it, the 1.7 update appears to be a labor of love, and Clint’s evolution will surely be handled with care. Perhaps with this new future, fans can finally transition their collective disdain away from the blacksmith and direct it toward the truly deserving target: Pierre.
