“What Happens at Night” to be Martin Scorsese’s “most personal” film

Martin Scorsese’s upcoming project, the supernatural thriller What Happens at Night, promises to be the most intimate work of the director’s storied career. This sentiment was recently echoed by his daughter, Francesca Scorsese.

According to Francesca, her father was drawn to the narrative due to its striking parallels with a profound struggle within their own family: his wife and her mother, Helen Morris, has been battling Parkinson’s disease for over three decades.

The script left an indelible mark on Francesca.

It’s a story about a husband and a dying wife. It’s deeply personal… a kind of grief he is trying to process. Because we are grieving my mom while she is still here. […] When we finished reading it, I was moved to tears; you are living through it in real-time,

— she shared during an appearance on the Zach Sang Show podcast.

What Happens at Night is adapted from Peter Cameron’s 2012 novel of the same name. The plot follows a married American couple—reportedly starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence—who travel to a snow-covered European nation to adopt a child. Upon their arrival, the couple finds themselves surrounded by a series of inexplicable and unsettling occurrences.

The film is currently slated for a 2027 release in theaters and on Apple TV. Scorsese’s most recent feature, Killers of the Flower Moon, premiered in 2023.
