We Tested Avatar From the Ashes: A Third-Person View That Changes Everything?

In just a few days, audiences will once again be swept away by the ethereal beauty of James Cameron’s universe as Avatar returns for its third cinematic chapter. Following the staggering box-office success of the second installment, the industry is watching closely to see if the visionary director can replicate his magic. Simultaneously, Ubisoft is preparing to expand its interactive vision of the franchise with a substantial new expansion for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Two years after the initial launch, the From the Ashes DLC introduces a transformative feature: a fully realized third-person perspective. After spending over four hours exploring this new content in 4K and speaking with the creative leads at Massive Entertainment, I’ve uncovered how these adjustments aim to redefine the player experience.

There was a time when every cinematic blockbuster was tethered to a hasty video game adaptation. These tie-ins were often forgettable, rushed to market to capitalize on marketing hype rather than artistic merit. Fortunately, that era has largely faded. Modern studios now prioritize brand integrity, understanding that a subpar game can tarnish a film’s prestige. The release of Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009 served as a definitive turning point, proving that a game could thrive by building its own identity rather than strictly mimicking a movie’s plot. Ubisoft’s Avatar follows this philosophy; while it had its critics, it was undeniably a visual masterpiece that offered unparalleled immersion on Pandora. By launching a year after the second film, the developers enjoyed a more flexible production schedule. However, one wonders if a simultaneous release would have bolstered its commercial impact—a question I posed to Creative Director Omar Bouali during our recent deep dive.

A Fresh Perspective: The Third-Person Evolution

The headline feature of From the Ashes is undoubtedly the introduction of the third-person camera. This shift does more than just change the view; it opens the door for players who previously found the first-person perspective disorienting or limiting. Crucially, this toggle is available for both the expansion and the base game, allowing newcomers to experience the entire journey from this new vantage point. While the first-person view excelled at sensory immersion, the third-person mode significantly improves platforming precision, as seeing your character’s positioning makes navigating Pandora’s verticality much more intuitive. Ubisoft has implemented a seamless transition system, allowing players to swap views instantly—on the PS5 controller, this is handled via the touchpad. This flexibility is a boon for stealth sequences, where understanding the physical scale of your Na’vi protagonist against the environment is vital.

So’lek’s Journey and Enhanced Brutality

Narratively, the DLC centers on So’lek, a character who now receives the depth and screen time he deserves. From the Ashes also serves as a bridge to Avatar 3, introducing the “Fire People”—a formidable new faction allied against the RDA. This expansion showcases a more visceral side of the Na’vi; So’lek is a seasoned warrior, capable of brutal executions that vary depending on whether you are wielding a bow, a firearm, or a blade. It appears Massive Entertainment took feedback regarding the base game’s “tame” combat to heart, injecting more tension and weight into every encounter. Combat fluidity has also been refined, allowing for a more natural flow between stealth and all-out warfare. One of the most significant mechanical additions is the ability to summon your Ikran instantly for aerial support or tactical retreats, radically changing the dynamic of large-scale skirmishes. Progress is tracked through a streamlined system using Dog Tags, focusing on tangible upgrades for combat and infiltration.

New Frontiers and Colossal Encounters

Addressing one of the main criticisms of the 2023 release—the lack of memorable boss fights—the DLC introduces epic encounters like the Fireback Mastodon. This behemoth, a terrifying hybrid of elephantine strength and prehistoric scale, requires strategic movement and precision to defeat within its arena. These battles are often multi-layered, featuring RDA reinforcements and platforming elements that keep players on their toes. Geographically, From the Ashes explores new corners of Pandora, such as the Ravines, where the environmental design oscillates between scorched earth and lush, vertigo-inducing heights. This ambitious expansion is set to arrive on December 19th for €25, strategically timed alongside the theatrical release of the third film. While the DLC is a paid addition, the much-requested third-person update will be available to all players for free, ensuring everyone can rediscover Pandora from a whole new angle.
