Fans Rebuild Valve’s Canceled Portal Prequel Without Portal Gun From Leaked Assets
Another reimagining of Valve’s unreleased Portal prequel F-Stop could be on the way.
Not every Valve project makes it to release. Some fans have long waited for a hypothetical Half-Life 3, and the company also spent time developing another Portal game. Although it was conceived as a sequel, it would have been a prequel in the series’ chronology.
F-Stop would have taken place long before the original Portal, in which players already had a portal gun. Instead of that device, the prequel’s protagonist would have used an unusual Aperture Science camera. Players could photograph an object, turning it into a photograph that they could carry elsewhere and use to place the object in a new location. The puzzles were built around that mechanic.
F-Stop was never released, but its source code leaked online, followed later by its game assets. Modders examined the available maps and assembled a playable build with several levels and working puzzles.

Development of Stop The F, a fan-made reimagining of the unreleased prequel, began before the asset leak. The game can be added to a Steam wishlist.
