Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and Kevin Morby Welcome First Child: ‘He Is Perfect’

Indie music mainstays Waxahatchee (Katie Crutchfield) and Kevin Morby are officially trading tour buses for baby bottles. The couple recently celebrated the arrival of their first child together, with Morby sharing the joyous update via his Substack publication on Wednesday (July 22). The proud father made it back just in time from an extensive European tour, beating the little one’s arrival by mere hours.

“I managed to return from my European tour right as our beautiful baby decided to make an early entrance, arriving two weeks ahead of schedule,” Morby shared regarding the newborn, who was born on Tuesday, July 21. While keeping the baby’s name private for now, he admitted that touring while awaiting the birth of his first child made for a uniquely nerve-wracking experience.

Crutchfield initially shared the news of her pregnancy back in April during the opening night of her co-headlining acoustic tour alongside MJ Lenderman. Introducing a poignant track to the audience, she hinted at the transformative chapter ahead.

Reflecting on the whirlwind timing, Morby added, “We were all holding our breath hoping he wouldn’t arrive prematurely. True to form, I was home for barely eight hours before Katie’s water broke. It feels like our little guy waited for me. His original due date wasn’t until August first, so we are thrilled to have this unexpected extra time with him. What we initially thought would be a Leo is officially a Cancer, and he is absolute perfection. Katie handled it all like an absolute powerhouse—though anyone who knows her already knew that.”

Because of the blessed event, Morby announced he must step away from his scheduled performance at Bon Iver’s Eaux Claires festival in Wisconsin this weekend. “I was genuinely looking forward to collaborating with Justin and Aaron [Dessner] in what felt like a wonderful full-circle moment, but I know there will be plenty of music in our future. Sending all my love to everyone attending this weekend,” he wrote. “For now, my version of jamming involves holding this little bundle of magic while playing Grouper’s ‘Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping’ on an endless loop. We couldn’t be more deeply in love.”

The heartfelt newsletter post featured an intimate snapshot of a shirtless Morby gently snuggling the newborn, alongside a beaming Crutchfield cradling their baby in the hospital.
