Violet Grohl Covers The Cure for Triple J’s Like a Version

Violet Grohl performed an acoustic cover of The Cure’s “High” for Triple J’s Like a Version series, replacing the original track’s layered guitar parts with a barebones arrangement.

“I love the childlike joy of the lyrics… it’s such a cute love song,” Grohl told Triple J regarding the 1992 single from The Cure album Wish. She noted that “High” has been a favorite for years, tracing her fandom back to age 12 or 13 when hearing “Friday I’m in Love” introduced her to the band’s catalog.

“I think it’s a perfect example of their sound during the early ’90s,” she stated, “and I love all the imagery in the lyricism.” Grohl stated that she wanted to evoke a teenage crush feeling in the performance and added regarding frontman Robert Smith, “I adore Robert Smith… I would hope that they would at least think it was okay.” She also performed her own track “595” from her debut album during the session.

The acoustic approach matches the style of Grohl’s debut album, Be Sweet to Me, which arrived May 29 via Auroura and Republic Records. Produced across 2024 and 2025, the release draws inspiration from late-1980s and early-1990s alternative rock, with Grohl referencing The Cure, Cocteau Twins, the Pixies, Soundgarden, and the Breeders as influences. “There’s something so powerful about that period of music, from the messaging to the visuals,” she stated when the album was announced. “It’s authentic and raw.”

Grohl is the eldest daughter of Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. She has contributed backing vocals to the Foo Fighters albums Medicine at Midnight and But Here We Are, performed at the band’s 2022 tribute concerts for drummer Taylor Hawkins, and joined surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear for a surprise reunion set at the 2025 FireAid benefit concert. Her first official release was a 2021 cover of X’s “Nausea” recorded with her father, which they later performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Novoselic, Dave Lombardo, and Greg Kurstin.

Grohl secured her first Billboard chart entry earlier this year when “THUM” reached No. 38 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. Her father’s band, Foo Fighters, holds 44 entries on the Alternative Airplay chart, tying U2 for the most in the history of the format.

She will perform at several U.S. festivals this fall, including Riot Fest, Shaky Knees, CBGB Festival, All Things Go D.C., and Corona Capital, ahead of her own headlining U.S. tour and European supporting dates for Beabadoobee.
