Valve Leaks Left 4 Dead 2 Trailer After 17 Years Due to Censorship Deadlocks

It was not entirely legal marketing, but the plan worked well.

Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek recently reflected on Left 4 Dead. The developers of the cooperative shooter once ran into a problem when they failed to meet the requirements of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

The Entertainment Software Rating Board refused to accept a trailer prepared by Valve for Left 4 Dead 2. Censors demanded that the video be toned down by cutting several violent scenes, but the game developers were unhappy with this approach because the promotional video would then fail to convey the atmosphere of Left 4 Dead 2.

The team would have had to prepare a trimmed trailer for the Entertainment Software Rating Board to approve its publication, but they found another way out by simply leaking the Left 4 Dead 2 trailer. In the end, players were still able to see the forbidden promotional material.

Because it was a leak rather than an official publication by Valve, the Entertainment Software Rating Board had no grounds to file claims against the creators of Left 4 Dead 2.

Left 4 Dead 2 continues to attract many players to this day. Recently, the cooperative shooter has maintained a peak concurrent player count on Steam of around 30,000 players. Various modifications continue to be released for the game.
