Valve Confirms Steam Controller Hardware Restock Is on the Way

The overwhelming enthusiasm for Valve’s latest PC peripheral, the Steam Controller, caught the company completely off guard. When orders officially went live on Monday, the sheer volume of traffic sent Steam’s servers into a frenzy, resulting in a total sell-out in less than an hour.

For those eager to get their hands on this elusive device, it is strongly advised to avoid third-party marketplaces where scalpers are driving up prices. Valve has confirmed that they are actively working to replenish stock and will share an updated timeline shortly.

“The Steam Controller sold out much faster than we anticipated, and we sincerely regret that everyone who wanted one couldn’t secure an order,” Valve stated via their official X account on Tuesday. “We are busy coordinating a restock and will provide an update on availability soon.”

While this response doesn’t guarantee immediate restocks, it is reassuring to receive direct communication from Valve addressing the situation.

The Steam Controller is nearly the quintessential PC gamepad

Valve’s latest iteration is a perfect companion for Steam, though its utility elsewhere is limited.

Valve may have underestimated the market’s appetite, especially given the $99 price point—a premium compared to standard offerings from Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. However, this cost is justifiable when considering the build quality. As noted in our review, this second attempt is a remarkable refinement of a controller engineered specifically for the Steam ecosystem.

“I struggle to envision playing my PC library with anything else,” wrote Giovanni Colantonio in our formal review. “Boasting a more intuitive design, superior ergonomics, and flawless integration with Steam, Valve has finally demonstrated that their initial, unconventional concept had merit; it simply required the right adjustments. While the final product leaves room for minor refinements—much like the Steam Deck—Valve has successfully crafted a console-grade PC controller that, while unique, feels like a genuine breakthrough.”

There is reason for optimism; the Steam Controller is not burdened by the same supply-chain constraints regarding complex components like RAM, which should allow Valve to accelerate production. While enthusiasts remain in suspense regarding broader hardware initiatives like Steam Machines or Steam Frame, it is evident that Valve is refining its approach to hardware design with promising results.
